Next up on the running calendar is Get In Gear. My PR for a 10K is 47:06 established at Get In Gear in 2004. My second fastest 10K is the split from the Earth Day Half Marathon, (47:45) so we should be able to improve the time a bit.
I should mention that the 2004 time was run on the modified course while the Ford bridge was being worked on. The race returned to the traditional course last year which includes running over the Lake Street bridge and down West River road. The traditional course brings the hill which everyone dreads in the TCM into play. As for goal times, I don’t really have one in mind. The unfortunate thing is that my top speed isn’t all that far away from where I’m running at now. The Race Time Calculator from Runner’s World converts the half marathon time to a 44:35 10K.
That seems reasonable, roughly a 7:10 pace. I feel like I could run faster then that, however, I don’t know that I can maintain that pace over a 45 minute effort. Time will tell. A flat seven minute pace works out to about 43:30. That’s quick, and perhaps a bit to fast for me at this point.
In the mean time, this weekend is the first 20 miler which means that I get to run the big loop around basically the whole town. Having raced the day before, it should be an interesting run. Running the first 20 will also make riding the Ironman out of the question. Sometimes you have to pick your events and stick to your training guns.
I’ve been riding the 2003 Bianchi Pista around rather then the Nishiki. It has the factory default 48×16 setup which is taller then the 44×16 setup on the Nishiki. Riding the pista is great for the legs and bad for the knees. I have to get the Nishiki into the shop for it’s spring checkup and flip the wheel over for some single speed action. Once I get the Nishiki back, in goes the Giro, then the Giant. It’s a never ending stream of bike shop maintenance. Now I just need to get people to stop stealing my wheels and life will be good.
As some of you might know, last year I did my first and only real
cycling competition. I rode exactly one TNT ride. I just got an email about it the other day, and this year they have a start ramp and a draft legal
team competition. Unfortunately, I doubt that any of these things will help me ride faster then my less then stellar 21 MPH result from last year.

OHMIGOSH. You’re totally going to surpass the old 10K PR. HUGELY. Purleez.
I have a feeling that starting position will be an important factor. Get In Gear is a rather large race, so the traffic on the first mile is almost always thick and slow.
I haven’t decided on any other strategic things. I know that I don’t want to rabit, so I’ll most likely take the first two walks at least. After that, things get a little dicey. The run mark at ~22 minutes is a long way from the end, however, the walk at ~32 minutes might be skippable. Decisions, decisions.
Rather large, indeed. I’ve never done that race, for that reason. I’m a snob that way. And others, too. haha Well, have a GREAT race!
Thanks EC! I’ll be sure to report the results back. It looks like there is a decent chance of rain at this point. Anyone else running?
Say, I peeked at your result. Where’s the happy dancin’ blog? Way to rock a PR, dude!!!! AWESOME!
Thanks EC, I have a post in the works on the experience.. but.. I’ve been dawdling..
