Sascha pointed me to Bolder in Boulder’s post titled My ordinary life
because she thought that I would enjoy it. The post includes the following quote:
Sometimes, I think that I am extraordinary, and then I step in a pool, on a bike, or on a run. Tonight is my last Boulder Stroke & Stride of the season, where I will try and PR in the swim, with sub 2:00/100m, run sub 8 min/miles, and still come in last in my age group — AGAIN!
Trust me, my friend, you would beat me out of the water by almost a decade. However, the post reminded me of the following conversation that actually occurred during happy hour
on a FRC Monday. Happy Hour, for the uninitiated, is the time after the run but before dinner when we stand around, cool off, and have a cocktail.
me: It’s not like any of us are ever going to win anything.
M: Well.. (looks at me)
me: That race doesn’t count..
K: What?
me: (trying to explain) There was a 5K race with a small field which I won in 20:05.
K: Wow..
me: Well, it’s surprising because.. in any normal race.. I would be five minutes behind the leaders.
K: That’s why I was saying wow..
Friends sure help you keep things in perspective.
In unrelated news..
I’ve made some changes to the blog recently. We’re now running on Wordpress 2.0.4 so if anyone notices something that’s not working, please let me know. I’ve also added a comment preview
plugin. It doesn’t work like the blogger preview, but it’s much better then nothing. Last but not least, I wrote a quick plugin to allow me to add the current list of popular posts when adding a post or a static page. You can see a sample on the Popular Posts page. They are popularity snapshots, which might be cool. We’ll see.
