I figured it’s time to get back to work — running seriously that is, so I’ve signed up for my next marathon.
In January of next year, I will be in sunny Florida running in the ING Miami Marathon. It should be a good course as it’s nice and flat, and I have an openly stated goal of 3:30. (There, NOW it’s openly stated)
Time will tell, although I have no intention of taking a ten day break in week 15 like I did for Grandma’s this year. That and a bit of will power will hopefully get me over the hump into the 3:20’s — though I’m sure it will be the high 3:20’s. Temperature may be the deciding factor. While I was running last night it occurred to me that the running temperature in Miami in January was most likely going to be warmer then 9PM on a cool night in October in Minneapolis. I suppose that’s par for the course when you live in a clime where you can sometimes see the Northern Lights.
Additionally, sometime between last spring and this fall, I had forgotten how much gear a person can go through while dealing with various portions of Minnesota weather. You’ve got to have at least two of everything. Hats, gloves, coats, fleeces, etc. You have to remember to carry spares when it gets really cold. Nothing is worse then riding a bike in 10 degree weather with a hat, gloves, and coat that has a nice, clammy layer of sweat on the inside. I get cold just thinking about it!
