Here is a screen cap of them NWS forecast for the Rathbun area over the weekend.
Last year was the one time that I remember it being nice for Memorial day. This year it’s the start of the new string of bad weather year(s). Some memorial years past include:
- Having it rain hard enough to flood the fire ring, forcing an emergency
fire move
to another ring by picking up pieces of hot soggy wood with a shovel. - Having the park ranger drive through the campground suggesting that people should
seek shelter.
- An attempt to stem tent flooding by putting one tent inside another. The project was a failure.
- A fire scattering “explosion” caused by “putting things in the fire.”
This year’s going to be classic!

Rathbun, IA. Now you are visiting my neck of the woods. Most of my extended family lives in Moravia. What made you decide to come down here?
A guy that I used to work with in Iowa City and a group of people who know each other from growing up in Red Oak, college, or working for various companies have been going to Rathbun (almost) every year for about 20 years. I’ve been going for more then 10 years myself.
This year was only the second year that we’ve been able to get into the lake, though we’ve been wet more times then I care to think about.
In all those years, I think we’ve been to and to Moravia once each on Memorial Day and once each on RAGBRAI. Moravia reminds me of my hometown in Illinois, but that’s a story for some other time.
