I’m happy with the result. I feel like I might have been able to go a little faster had I known a little more about the course. On the bike leg, there’s a little rise that you have to climb twice. Each time up ground me down to a stupidly slow speed. Additionally, once we were in the park itself, I didn’t really have a good feel for where we were or what was coming up. The run leg suffered from this a bit also as I didn’t realize how close the finish line was until I had nearly stepped on the finish mat. Here are the more detailed timing numbers.
| Event | Place | Time | Pace | Transition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Swim (0.5K) | 340 | 10:49 | 1:59 / 100y | 4:01 |
| Bike (25K) | 135 | 44:49 | 20.8 MPH | 1:49 |
| Run (5K) | 153 | 22:34 | 7:16 / mile |

I’ve been dragging my feet with the results of last weekends triathlon due to a general lack of free time and/or lack of free energy. Rather then continue to beat the You wouldn’t believe what I had to go through
drum, I’ll just give one more little sample of why the weekend’s chaos was so tiring.
When the alarm went off at 3AM on Sunday morning, I felt ok. I got up and decided that I would be nice to the room next to me and not start making morning lattes. I opted for coffee, yogurt, and a bit of fruit. Got a shower taken, packed the race day backpack, etc. It was now about 4AM and I had decided that I didn’t really want to go through the hassle of loading the vehicle before the race, so I called the front desk to ask for a late checkout.
Checkout time was usually noon, so I didn’t think it would be that big of a deal. The person who I talked to informed me that they were the night auditor,
and that they didn’t have the authority
to be able to verify a late checkout. I would need to speak to a daytime person, and those people would be available after 8AM. I informed the individual that at 8AM, I would already be in the water
and unable to call. Apparently none of that matters, though I was told that they would leave a note
telling the daytimers that I would be calling.
So, I loaded myself down with the race stuff and headed to the vehicle. I got a couple blocks away and realized that I hadn’t picked up the directions to the course start. After a short internal debate, I decided to go back and get them. I entered the hotel, waited for the elevator, and got to my floor only to find that my key no longer worked. I returned to the lobby to find the main desk unmanned. I stood there for a couple minutes frozen in indecision, then finally decided that I would just wing it
since the other alternatives all seemed so bleak.
In spite of everything, I did make it to the course on time. I got my race packet, got marked, picked a spot in the transition area, got some degree of setup done, and finally got to start my second triathlon. Yea!
I’ll have to write some more about the race experience itself in another post. ![]()
