Commentary

Day one of the 2007 edition of the Cheese Country Hell Week opened with a route called, Take me to the river. In broad strokes, it was a route from Richland Center to Lynxville and back. Along the way, there were some white knuckle decents and some memoriable climbs. For instance Lynxville itself is on the Mississippi river; the decent into Lynxville was the 47.7 max speed moment and the climb out of there was a mile long and 500 feet tall. According to some of the GPS enabled riders, total climb on the day was over 8000 feet.

I did put the “sugar milk” plan to the test. I purchased a pound of sugar and a large-ish glass at Walmart. The plan was to put what I thought might be six tablespoons of sugar into the glass then double it. I remember watching Nate craft “sugar milk” and thinking that it was a completely crazy amount of sugar. Sugar milk is best drank fast so the suspended sugar doesn’t have time to think it might be a good idea to return to the bottom of the glass.

Here’s another vital statistic. Number of times I have sworn at some kind of coffee making device: 0, nada, zilch. ;)

I did not take a camera today, but I’m going to have to take one tomorrow.

Notable sites

  • There was a turkey vulture standing on a fence post near the road that had it wings fully extended. (like the eagle on the quarter) I thought it was an amazing likeness to the real thing until it started appraising me for prospective meal-like characteristics. Eventually it flew away.
  • The was a “road” named “Corporate Drive” which was a dead end. The two signs were pleasantly located close enough to get the complete picture.
  • Someone was making metal sculptures which included food suspended in the belly of people and a small fish that had been eaten by a larger fish with big teeth.
  • There was a staggering number of farms that I passed where a whole herd of cows stopped everything and watched me go by. I can only imagine what might have happened had I uttered the magic phrase, “Here cow-ie, cow-ie, cow-ie.”
  • There was a town that has a sign as you entered the city limits stating they were the “center of [something].” I’m thinking it was the county. The towns population was just over 100 and it was unincorporated.

Thats all for today, I’ll try to have some pictures from tomorrows ride. I think the route for tomorrow is only ninety something..

    Ooo! Another convert!

My recipe (from p. 241 of the Bible), says 5 tablespoons of sugar and 16 oz. of skim milk. If you’re in a hurry, that’s just short of 1/3rd of a cup. And yes, mix it well, ’cause it’s going to be a saturated sugar solution.

Enjoy the ride–looks like excellent weather!
