Well, the plan to post something each day from RAGBRAI may have been a good one, but it proved to be hard to execute. The start of the plan was to get some portable web access so I would be able to post without being tied to a place, or having to hunt for a hotspot every night.
I was under the impression that the hoard of cell phone using riders wouldn’t interfere with this idea, but I was incorrect. Service was, at best, intolerable bordering on nonexistent. I don’t really blame AT&T or Apple for the issue. My cell has never really worked for that particular week. Text messages appear to be about the only way to get information to or from those you want to communicate with, and texting tends to boil down to using less words rather then more. I would say that a post containing simply the name of the town where my carcass was presently residing in would have taken about an hour spent watching the little animated clock spin.
So, RAGBRAI went fine. Much fun was had. I rode everything that was available based on transportation needs of others. There aren’t really all that many things to tell about the week other then I had a really bad hangover on day 1. (Sunday) Other then that, it was just standard RAGBRAI interaction which is odd enough anyway.
Since I’ve been back, it’s been run, run, run. I’m trying to get into some kind of shape — hopefully not pear shape — for the Marine Corp Marathon in October. A typical training program is already at 16 miles for the Sunday long run. It’s kinda hard to jump from about 12 miles a week up into a 16 mile run and 40+ a week. It’s short term struggle to pay for longer term success. Hopefully.
I’ve started using FitDay again to help with the nutrition and caloric intake during training. Goal weight for the race is 130 lbs. That would be a drop of about 10 or 12 pounds from Miami and I’m hoping that it will allow me to push down under 3:30. I only need about 20 seconds a mile to get there. I sure hope it works!
