Lottery Loser

The New York Road Runners sent me the official news the other day:
Dear …,
Thank you for applying to the ING New York City Marathon 2008. We’re sorry to inform you that…
The email goes on to politely say that I should contact various charitable organizations who — for a few thousand dollars — would be glad [...]

MidYear Report Card

Over here I expressed some intentions. Now for the reality:

Frozen Half, (1:53:11, ~8:39s) check.
Human Race.. skipped.
Get-In-Gear, (44:55, 7:14) check.
Pigman Sprint Tri, registered.
(extra) Minneman Sprint Tri, registered.
Lifetime Olympic Tri, registered.
Time Trailing?? not so much..
Twin Cities Marathon, registered.
New York Marathon, entered into the lottery pool.

At this point, I’m two to the good, with three extra events (there [...]

Running with your ears on, Redux

I recently came across this article relating to the USA Track & Field regulation against wearing headphones in sanctioned events. Here’s the opening paragraph:
At the peak of the marathon season, with one of the year’s biggest races set for Sunday in New York, a worry has emerged among some runners, and it has nothing to [...]

Marine Corps Marathon, tidbits

The following images were shamelessly pilfered from the runpix.com website which does visualizations of marathon races. Frankly, being a data wienie — or more specifically a heart rate data wienie, these guys and gals do really cool stuff. Check it!

The view above shows the runners who finished in the 30 seconds before and after my [...]

Marine Corps Marathon Results

Just a quick post on yesterdays run. Results are as follows:
Chip Time: 3:31:29
Clock Time: 3:33:57
Overall place: 1373/20667
Gender place: 1194/12610
Division place: 234/2263
Age Grade: 59.3%
I don’t really understand the age grade number. There’s a blurb on what it means, but the only interesting aspect of it is 60% is the minimum level for a “local level” performance. [...]

Not exactly the inspiration I was hoping for…

I was reading the book “PRE” by Tom Jordan on the flight into Washington DC last night and ventured upon a short commentary by Mary Decker. If the name isn’t familiar, she’s known as Mary Slaney these days. Of course having spent a little bit of time on the track in the early 80’s, it [...]

9.74, and so it goes…

On Sep. 9th in Rieti, Italy Astafa Powell set a new world record in the Mens 100m sprint. The new record time is 9.74; three hundredths of a second faster then the previous record — also set by Powell. Three hundredths is the largest jump since Maurice Green lowered the mark by five hundredths in [...]

How to do the math

Ever wonder how fast you are running? Everyone does it. It’s natural, particularly once you have become fatigued enough to start to slow down. Here’s a quick and dirty way to get a gauge on your pace.
In order to calculate your pace, you need to know two things: time spent and distance covered. The idea [...]

It may have been a moment of weakness..

Tuesday, for some inexplicable reason, I signed up for next years Lifetime Triathlon — the olympic distance. The lengths are 1.5K swim, 40K bike, 10K run. 1500 meters of swimming in Lake Nokomis should provide enough motivation to make anyone want to get out of the water just as soon as possible.
I suppose [...]

58:33

58 minutes 33 seconds is the new half-marathon world record set by Samuel Wanjiru on March 7th and ratified by the IAAF on Wednesday. His pace works out to approximately 4:47 minutes/mile, and he averaged well over 13 MPH over the distance.
